What is VSync & Should I Use It For Gaming? Read on to know more. Here is a guide to VSync and some useful advice.
If you play computer games or watch videos of other people playing computer games, you’ve almost certainly seen what’s called “VSync.” This stands for “Vertical Synchronization.”
It’s a fancy way of saying that whatever is on the screen when you are watching or playing a video will be displayed exactly the same way on the screen of your computer or video game console.
The problem with sync is that it’s very inefficient. It basically causes everything on the screen to be redrawn (re-rendered) every time the screen changes even if nothing has actually changed.
The main reason for this is that the computer or console has to wait until the current frame is finished rendering before it can start drawing the next frame.
What is VSync?
VSync (Vertical Synchronization) is a feature of most modern display adapters that allows the video card to send more than just the even scan lines to the monitor.
If you are not using VSync, every time your program updates the screen, the monitor must refresh and recreate the picture from the top down. This causes a noticeable stutter in the display when the adapter sends new image data to the monitor.
The stutter is most visible when moving objects or changing colors on the screen. The Vsync feature is turned on and off at the beginning of each frame by the operating system or application.
It can also be manually turned on or off through a program like DisplayFusion. The Vsync setting is not available for X11 applications on Windows. To turn on Vsync in an X11 application, you must use the Xvnc server that comes with X11.
Xvnc is a free, open-source software implementation of the VNC protocol that allows clients to connect to an X server running on one computer and view and control that X server on another.
The “client” computer can be almost anything with an X11 display driver, including a PC, a Mac, a game console, or any other type of Unix or Linux computer.
On my Windows machine, I have Xming installed and running on my network with an Xvnc client on my main computer. When I run Xvnc from my main computer, it connects to the X server running on my network computer (the “server”) and then starts an X11 session on my local machine.
This means I can run any Windows application from my main computer and control it from my local computer using my keyboard and mouse. To use this setup, you will need the following:
- Windows XP or later Xming Xvnc Download and install Xming. It’s easy-to-use and free.
- After installation, you should see Xming listed in your Start menu under the Accessories folder. If you don’t see it, double-click on the “Start” button and then click on “Computer”.
- Then, under “System Devices”, you should see “Terminal Services Client”. Right-click on that entry and then select “Properties”.
- In the “Property Manager”, you should see an option to “Add” a new remote computer.
- Name the remote computer “XvncServer” and then click the “OK” button.
- When you are done, you should have two entries in your “Terminal Services Client” list: “XvncServer” and your normal Windows computer.
- Next, download and install Xvnc. You can find it at www.x.org/archive/X11R 2.8/doc/zinc- tar.gz. Unzip the file and then read the README file inside the unzipped folder for instructions on how to compile and install the software.
- Once installed, start up Xvnc by clicking on the “Start” button and then clicking on “Xvnc”.
- The first time you do this, you will be prompted to allow Xvnc to make some configuration changes to your X server. Just click the “Allow” button and then Xvnc will launch a new X11 session on your local machine.
Pros And Cons Of VSync
Although VSync is just one of many ways to sync computers, it’s an incredibly useful one. Read below to see what we think are the most notable pros and cons of VSync:
The main benefit to VSync is it’s built into your graphics card. It’s an option that you can turn on or off in the settings of your Nvidia or Radeon card. It is down to your preference and possibly what games you are playing.
Whether on or off, your GPU and monitor will inevitably be out of sync, resulting in screen tear – something many gamers just cannot stand to see.
Turning on the feature will match the refresh rate and FPS to produce smooth results. The second reason is that it can be very resource-intensive.
The more powerful your GPU is, the more power it needs to keep up with the demands of VSync. This means that it can drain battery life if you have a high-powered phone.
Example: If you are playing The Witcher 3, then you should turn off VSync. It’s not necessary and will cause screen tears and potentially cause your FPS to suffer.
The bottom line is, for most people, the 120Hz display will make no difference whatsoever in their ability to play multi-player games, and in many cases will actually make things worse.
The main drawback to VSync is that if you play a game that doesn’t have it enabled by default, you will see tearing and stuttering. This is a result of the fact that you will be pulling a higher frame rate out of your GPU than you can see on your monitor. Your monitor refresh rate is usually 60Hz (60 images per second), and the frame rate of your GPU may be 50 or 100 FPS.
You can use a utility like Fraps to measure this rate. To fix this problem, you will need to find a way to change the settings of your GPU. If you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8, you may already have a program called PowerStrip installed. This utility lets you adjust your game’s graphics settings. It is located in the control panel under Display Settings.
If you are running Windows XP, you will need to download a program called DisplayFusion. If you don’t have any of these programs, you can still get the same results by adjusting the settings on your monitor.
There are a few settings that you will want to check when adjusting the refresh rate on your monitor. One of them is the refresh rate.
There are some ways to fix VSync problems. You can get a higher refresh rate on your monitor if you use a 120Hz LCD monitor. This is not usually the case, but it is possible.
There are some other options to consider. One is the frame-buffer size option. If you set your frame buffer to a higher value, you will see less screen tearing and stuttering.
Setting the frame buffer to a value of 16 or 32 megabytes will make a big difference in performance. Another option is to use a USB display adapter. This will give you a higher refresh rate than what is displayed by your monitor.
This feature allows you to synchronize your Facebook profile with your Windows Live account. You can also use the “Friends & Family” function of your Windows Live account to access your Facebook friends.
Find My Friends: Use this feature to locate your friends and family who have their PCs set up as their “home PC”. You can also use this feature to find the location of a friend’s PC.
Use this mode for playing the most recent versions of your favorite games. It has a positive effect on FPS (Frames Per Second), making games run smoother and feel more responsive.
If you are using a gaming mouse with this setting, it will be helpful if the sensor in the mouse is capable of detecting more than one movement in a given period of time.
You can also use this mode to watch DVDs and Blu-ray movies without any stuttering or skipping.
Highlighted Video: This is similar to enhanced sync except that it only synchronizes the currently highlighted video area on the screen. You can use this setting for watching videos or DVD movies without being distracted by other areas of the screen.
This is a new feature in the new graphics cards from NVIDIA. The feature makes sure that the refresh rate is exactly the same as the refresh rate of the monitor. It will not allow the frame rate to exceed the refresh rate. This means that the monitor’s refresh rate must be 120Hz, 240Hz, or 60Hz.
This feature will let you watch movies with no problems and enjoy playing games in high-detail settings without any stuttering or skipping. Frame Rate Limiting: This feature is designed to reduce stuttering and skipping while watching videos, DVDs, or Blu-ray discs. You can set the minimum and maximum frame rate that your video player will use
Should I Turn VSync On or Off?
Hence, it is very important for a person to make sure whether he/she should turn VSync off or not. There is no harm in turning it off but then again there is some good too. If you turn VSync off, it will make the gameplay smoother.
There is not much difference in playing a game with the VSync off or on. But, there will be no flickering on the screen which will make the game more comfortable for a user.
The best thing to do is to turn it off as long as you are not using a gaming laptop because then you won’t need VSync at all. VSync is very helpful in the case of laptops and other devices with low-resolution monitors.
Some people feel that VSync is annoying and they want to turn it off but then again there is not much difference in playing a game with the VSync off or on. The best thing to do is to turn it off if you are not using a gaming laptop because then you won’t need VSync at all.
There are some people who think that I am obsessed with FPS and that’s why I wrote this entire book. Nothing is further from the truth. It is true that I am obsessed with getting as high a frame rate as possible but only when it comes to playing the game. Playing the game is one thing, reading about how to play the game is another.
In conclusion, sync is something that can be used for good or bad, but its usage has to be well thought through. When it comes to the gaming side of things, sync is one of those things that you cannot turn off.
Some users have mentioned that they do not like it when they see the “VSync” screen during gameplay. There are those who have turned off sync and still play games well enough.
It will be a good idea for the players to know about syncs. They must know about it because the more they know about it, the better they will perform in games.
If you are using a mouse and you have a touch screen, then you should turn off the “touchscreen” mode in the operating system. It is very important that you turn off the touchpad if you want your mouse to work properly.
If you do not do this, the computer may not work properly because the mouse is not working properly. In most cases, if you are having problems with the mouse or any other device, you will have to go to the manufacturer’s website to look up the instructions on how to fix it.
