What Is V-SYNC?
In the old days, televisions were only able to show one thing at a time. The person operating the remote control would push a button which would make the screen go black for a brief period of time and then refresh with the new image. This was known as “interlacing”. It worked well enough except for those few situations where there was a lot of motion on the screen.
In those cases, when the screen would go from showing one image to another, you would see a brief flash of the previous image before the new one came up. This is called “motion blur”.
Today, almost all televisions (and computer monitors) show every image instantly without any motion blur whatsoever. The way they do this is by using something called “tearing” or “scanning”. What happens is, the screen is divided into tiny sections called “pixels”.
So to draw a horizontal line, the GPU draws the first pixel in the leftmost section of the screen, then moves to the next section of the screen, and draws a single pixel there.
It keeps doing this until it has drawn every pixel in the horizontal line. By comparison, the CPU does everything in “real-time”. That means, it waits for the monitor to display each image before moving on to the next image.
The problem with tearing (and interpolating) is that it uses more power than just displaying each image instantly. For example, if you have a 1280 x 1024 (1280 being the width and 1024 being the height) screen that is displaying 60 images per second, and you tear or interpolate between those images, it will use (on average) about 160 kilowatts (160,000 watts) of power.
How Does V-SYNC Work?
The V-SYNC feature on most computers is very simple. It automatically detects if there is tearing or tearing interpolation on your display, and uses the best one for each individual program. For example, when you are playing a game, it will detect if there is tearing, and display it at the same rate as the game (60 Hz).
But if the program is using a V-SYNC-compatible graphics card and the monitor supports it, it will actually sync to the monitor’s refresh rate (50 Hz) instead.
The reason why V-SYNC works so well is that most TVs and computer monitors have a refresh rate of 60 Hz, while most computer graphics cards have a refresh rate of 50 Hz. Immediately after the GPU has finished drawing each image on the screen, it sends that image data to the monitor.
The monitor then scans across the screen and displays that image immediately after receiving it. Therefore, if you are using V-SYNC, the actual time between when the graphics card finishes drawing an image and when the monitor receives that image data is zero. This gives the illusion of the image being displayed instantly.
Most modern video games do not use V-SYNC. Why is that?
Simply because most video game programmers are too stupid to realize how easy it is to write a V-SYNC compatible program. It’s actually very simple. All you have to do is, tell your program to wait until the monitor has finished refreshing before moving on to the next command. In other words, your program has to tell the graphics card, “Wait a minute.
On the contrary, don’t display this image on the screen for another millisecond or two. Just display this image now.” How Does V-SYNC Work in Windows XP/Vista? The process is exactly the same. The only difference is, there is no hardware support for V-SYNC in Windows XP and Vista. If your computer has an Nvidia GeForce graphics card, it has built-in V-SYNC support. Otherwise, there’s nothing you can do.
There’s a software solution, though. There’s a program called “Video Synchronization” that you can download from the Nvidia website. The Video Synchronization application works by intercepting all the video commands that your GPU sends to the monitor, and then automatically tells the monitor to wait until it receives the next video command before displaying it.
V-SYNC Input Lag Trick
If you are using V-SYNC, there is one thing you have to remember. When you are playing a game with a V-SYNC compatible graphics card, the game will display everything perfectly. However, there will be a delay (about 1/10 of a second) between when you tell the game to display something, and when the game actually starts to display it on the screen.
This is because the Video Synchronization program is forcing the monitor to wait until it receives the next video command before displaying the image. Therefore, if you are using V-SYNC, you should always test your GUI (Graphical User Interface) for responsiveness immediately after starting up the computer. If it is unresponsive, it is almost certainly because your CPU is overloaded.
If your GUI is responsive immediately after starting up the computer, but unresponsive a few minutes later, it’s almost certain that your graphics card is the problem. Moreover, if your CPU is overloaded and your graphics card is idle, there is a good chance that your monitor is just too slow. You can test this theory by turning off your computer’s power.
As far as the video game itself is concerned, the V-SYNC input lag is negligible. It is so small that you cannot actually see it. The reason why it is so small is because of the way V-SYNC works.
When the V-SYNC program detects that the refresh rate of the monitor is too low, it automatically raises the monitor’s refresh rate to the correct value. This prevents the monitor from having to wait for the next frame to be completely drawn before displaying it on the screen.
Therefore, all you have to do is turn off V-SYNC when your computer is not in use, and leave it on when your computer is being used. If your computer is fast enough, there will be no noticeable difference between using V-SYNC and not using V-SYNC. However, if your computer is slow, you might notice some very minor slowdown with V-SYNC enabled.
What Is NVIDIA Adaptive V-SYNC And How To Turn It On?
In brief, Nvidia has implemented an adaptive version of the V-SYNC technology into its GeForce 8 series and higher graphics cards. As of right now, the adaptive V-SYNC is only available on the GeForce 8 series and higher, and you have to manually turn it on. You should also know that there are many types of refresh rates that the monitor can support. Some monitors can support refresh rates as low as 30 hertz, while others can only go up to 60 hertz. As a result, you have to find out what the refresh rate of your monitor is, and then tell your graphics card that your monitor’s refresh rate is that value.
If your graphics card does not know what the refresh rate of your monitor is, it will automatically detect it for you. However, you should know that you cannot use adaptive V-SYNC with a monitor whose refresh rate is 50 hertz or less.
The way you turn on adaptive V-SYNC is by pressing the FN + F5 keys on your keyboard simultaneously. This will open a small window where you can enter either “sync” or “no sync”. Just make sure that you do not forget to press the FN key after you enter those two characters.
