Scarlett, a two-year-old red panda, loves it when zookeepers hide her food in a ball hole. Zookeepers said he was happy as he dug around for his treats, spilling balls everywhere in the process.
Keepers say one-year-old Taizhong really likes food despite his sweet nature.
Police described Xena as young and aggressive. One of her guards says she’s fearless – just like Xena, the strong female warrior from TV.
The arrival of the red panda at the zoo is part of the conservation plan. Through the plan, scientists match pandas by looking at their genes to ensure that each pair’s offspring are genetically distinct.

At 5pm on March 25, a cold and wet Wednesday earlier this year, Tian Tian, the giant panda cub at Edinburgh Zoo, jumped from his wooden stand outside and began to breathe. Tian Tian, born at Beijing Zoo in 2003, has been an overseas tourist since arriving in the UK in December 2011 with the zoo’s male panda Yang Guang. Big and, by all appearances, a very cute thing, but Tian Tian (“Sweetie”) is a panda with more eyes, more intelligence and more car.

These are unusual qualities. Pandas are herbivorous snakes with a slow metabolism. Almost all of them live on reeds, which are poorly dug. They do everything they can to avoid unnecessary effort. If you give Yangguang a ball, he seems to know that he can hit it, then let it go. Tian Tian, on the other hand, is known for clearing balls and making forward runs. Sometimes he hangs from the straps at the top of his inner trunk—a nickname his teammates call the “Ninja Panda”—just in case. He is not good at all. Tian Tian throws guards off duty and sometimes sneaks past veterans with their giant claws. “He’s got a mind of his own, that’s for sure,” says Alison McLean, chief panda keeper at Edinburgh Zoo, who loves him for that reason. “You have to be very careful around him.”
That afternoon, as they prepared to leave for the day, the pandas at the zoo kept a close eye on Tian Tian. When he stopped and walked to a pale green fence that separated his compound from Yangguang, McLean, sitting in his office a few hundred meters away, followed one of the 16 cameras that observe animals day and night. The end of March is right in the middle of the short, delicate and confusing panda breeding season. Female pandas only mate once a year. The optimal window for mating – the “fall zone” in zoology – is about 24 hours long. Depending on the weather, food and preferences of the bear, the build up to this time may be significant and last for weeks, or it may come on suddenly, without warning. “The signs can be very accurate,” Dr Simon Girling, the head of Edinburgh Zoo, told me. “We’re always worried we’re going to miss the window.”
On the screen, Maclean looked closely at Tian Tian Gure and continued his calls. Raised to live a solitary life, pandas are kept in cages to prevent them from killing each other. The only exception to this is the season of the farm, when the bears are invited to chat and later, euphemistically, “welcome”. Yang Guang, who was sitting on the cave at lunch and eating, saw Tian Tian, and called back. “We thought, ‘That’s cool,'” McLean said, “it’s pretty interactive, good.”
However, McLean was cautious. Since the panda’s arrival, the team at Edinburgh Zoo have tried three times to tame the bears – with lots of love and attention from the public – and each attempt has ended in disappointment. After a thorough review of these efforts at the end of 2014, this year’s season was just as stressful. But the police also came up with a new trick or two. A few weeks ago, Maclean filled the urine of Long Hui, an amazing little panda kept in Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo, next to Yang Guang and Tian Tian, to stir the air with competition and opportunities. “He had a lot of time to smell and see what was going on,” McLean said. “He came out and was like, ‘Wow!’ He was everywhere.

As in previous years, however, a lot of similar police work took the form of careful observation – using bamboo, behavior, daily pictures of Tian Tian Vulva – to make sure that it is prepared everyone for a long time. An important part of this monitoring is the analysis of hormones in Tian Tian’s urine. Since mid-March, McLean and his team have been trying to collect four samples a day, but it’s been a challenge. Females who come into heat take to lakes and rivers to indicate that they are mated, and although Tian Tian has been taught to urinates on command, but refuses to obey. “A lot of times he’s like, ‘I’m going to stick with it,'” McLean said. Guards collect precious drops from the ground with spikes when they are not looking.
The urine samples go by bus or taxi to Forbes Howie, an endocrinologist at the University of Edinburgh, but their final interpretation is the part of Iain Valentine, the director of the Panda Project at Edinburgh Zoo. A tall, toothy, tall man, Valentine was the maverick of Edinburgh and his maverick, who first dreamed of bringing pandas to Scotland – the northernmost known place for the animals – around ten years ago. Since then, he has been the catalyst and architect of the zoo’s efforts to breed Britain’s first panda. Every spring, Valentine, 51, and an expert on the capercaillie, a large tree, spends weeks thinking about changes in panda estrogen and progesterone, as well as various other proteins. Future ovulators are looking for symptoms – “double peaks” and “big drops” – and wish for the next set of results from the laboratory.
By the afternoon of March 25, Valentine believed that Tian Tian had been in “overload”—the stage at which her estrogen levels reached the peak of progesterone—12 days earlier, and that Ovulate in two or three days. A measure of understanding is important. Because pandas are so rare, and their breeding season is so short, it is common practice in zoos to dress the females, as well. and trying to marry naturally. For scientific and political purposes (all pandas are officially borrowed from the Chinese government), Valentine already has two experts from the CCRCGP —the center of China’s panda research—at picnics next to the zoo. . A group of eager biologists from Germany set out to prepare for the special inoculation on airplanes the next day. Germany, led by Professor Thomas Hildebrandt from the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, has been producing special tian tians for the past two years.
Valentine saw Tian Tian on camera. In a urine sample taken at 8:30 am, she noticed a slight drop in her estrogen, but it was not taken into account. At 9.50 am the second sample was taken by the team, but it was decided not to send it, but wait for it to arrive. hence the lunch sample, which was taken at 2.30 pm. “We thought not much was going to happen,” Valentine said. No new information is expected until late in the evening, and the images of Tian Tian and Yang Guang are quietly encouraging.
