In an order issued on February 5, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to block and block as many as 232 applications originating from or related to China. These included 138 betting applications and 94 online lending applications.

In an ongoing crackdown on such apps over the past year, many of these Chinese lending apps have been found to be controlling users’ phones and sending sensitive information to lenders digitally. In many cases, such applications have been found to harm people with morphed images while collecting loans.

These platforms have put many people in debt traps. As a result, many cases of young people and the elderly dying by suicide have appeared in the past few years. The government has ordered Google to block such apps from the market, and efforts have yielded little results so far.

Surprisingly, even though the websites of loan technology players like Prosus-backed PayU’s LazyPay and Kishsht have been blocked in the country, their apps can still be downloaded from Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

On the other hand, betting tools have also hit the news for all the wrong reasons. Many such platforms attract high paying users and trap them in a cycle of high payments but no reward.

Cases have also emerged where many Chinese nationals allegedly used several organizations with the support of Indians to run fraudulent online platforms. Many such platforms have been used to launder money from these fake apps and send them across borders.

Next In The Line Of Fire

Since these betting sites operate without any regulation and are located outside India, it is difficult to prosecute these companies in a legal case.

Most of these betting platforms operate under the guise of sports blogs and use marketing tactics to attract users.

This is close to the Indian government ordering Google which is a search engine to stop displaying all kinds of ads from foreign online betting companies. Earlier, the central government asked broadcasters and video streaming services not to broadcast advertisements related to online gambling.

The move comes nearly a year after the Union government banned 54 apps over fears of Chinese origin or some Chinese connection.

The app bans began in 2020 after the Center placed its first ban on 59 apps in June of that year. Big names including short-form video platform TikTok, file-sharing app ShareIt, and UC Browser have been affected by the conflict, among other popular apps.

Meanwhile, more restrictions were imposed, affecting about 320 Chinese applications. Counting the current 232 applications, the total is 552.
